Ramsgate 2-1 Guernsey

Guernsey suffered last-minute heartbreak as a late penalty condemned them to a 2-1 defeat to Ramsgate at the Southwood Stadium on Saturday.
The Green Lions had survived a few close calls in the second half and looked like they were going to hang on for a well-earned point before Craig Thompson was brought down in the box and Joe Taylor converted the winner from the spot in the 90th minute.
The hosts shaded the opening exchanges, although Glyn Dyer’s free-kick that was comfortably held by home goalkeeper Luke Watkins was the first chance of the game.
The Rams took the lead in the 12th minute through Pulman’s free-kick from 25 yards. Chris Tardif scuffed a clearance and as Ramsgate seized possession back and bore down on the Guernsey penalty area, Sarnian skipper Sam Cochrane brought down Taylor. Ian Pulman’s inch-perfect set-piece found the corner just out of reach of Tardif diving to his right.
Pulman hooked a shot wide from six yards a few minutes later but the Green Lions were growing into the game and showed more intent when Craig Young fired wide from distance.
The deserved leveller came on 26 minutes and was a great team goal. Guille Fernandez battled to retain possession for his team deep in his own half and squared it to Simon Geall.
The right-back found Dyer in midfield, who in turn clipped a lovely ball towards the left-corner of the penalty area for Dom Heaume to chase. Heaume let the ball bounce before letting fly and saw his shot find the top left-hand corner at the near post.
Ross Allen threatened within a minute of the second half kicking off when he was put through. He went for a left-footed lob but Watkins leaped high enough to get a hand to it and deflect it wide of goal.
Ramsgate slowly got themselves on top as the second half wore on and Tardif had to be the hero just before the hour-mark when Pulman found himself through on goal. The Sarnian stopper spread himself to make the block and the scramble to get to the rebound saw the ball somehow squirm away from goal for a corner.
Tardif then had to be at his best again as he flung himself to his right to turn away a long-distance drive from Taylor. A few minutes later, Oliver Gray headed against the angle of post and crossbar from a right-wing cross.
Luke Winch was introduced for the Green Lions for the tiring Glyn Dyer in the final 10 minutes and threatened to change the dynamic of the game with his lively cameo. He hit a low drive from distance that was held by Watkins.
Gray came close again when the ball dropped to him in the area but Jamie Dodd flung himself in the way to deflect the ball into the side netting.
It looked like GFC had held out, but they were stunned late on when an attack broke down and Ramsgate’s counter-attack down the right led to desperate defending.
The ball fell to Pulman in the area and in Cochrane’s over-enthusiasm to make the block, the captain brought down the Rams striker for a clear penalty. Taylor kept his cool to slot into the bottom corner and earn the win.
Guernsey dropped to fifth in the table.
